Hip-hop circles were buzzing when we announced an upcoming collaboration between Joey Bada$$ and legendary producer DJ Premier. After several months of anticipation, Green Label Sound is proud to announce the track “Unorthodox”. The young Brooklyn MC got hip-hop heads talking with the release of his debut mixtape 1999 (via Cinematic Music Group), as it echoed the vintage New York sound of the late 90’s. With their increasing following, Joey Bada$$ and this Pro Era crew are quickly becoming hip-hop’s brightest young stars.
The partnership between Bada$$ and Premo made perfect sense as both artists’ styles complemented each other well. On Joey, Premo said, “His music moved me in a way where its like ‘Oh, I like his attitude, I like how’s he coming across; it reminds me of how we felt at his age and how I feel now.” Bada$$ claimed Gang Starr’s Moment of Truth as one of his biggest influences, and from listening to “Unorthodox” you can hear how seamless his flow fits over Premier’s signature boom bap sound. Representing his Pro Era team and borough proudly, Bada$$ effortlessly rhymes well beyond his years and in a manner many would consider “unorthodox” in hip-hop’s current state.
